All morning services on January 29 will center around our African Student Education Fund and LAUMC’s support of students at Africa University in Zimbabwe.
What started in 2005 as a decision by our United Methodist Women to help a young African woman with university tuition payments has developed into a major commitment for LAUMC. First one student was supported by this newly established fund, then three students, then four….and now, seven years later, we are helping fourteen women pursue higher education!
The cost to educate one student at Africa University is $5400. This sum covers tuition, room, board, medical and student union fees. Our fund supports each of our students with a partial scholarship of half tuition, $2700.
The development of Africa University was a consequence of the growth of United Methodism in Africa. It is a private university and relies on student fees and UMC support. Opening in 1992 with 40 students from 12 countries, the university now has an enrollment of 1200 full-time students from 27 countries.
A special collection at all services will benefit the African Student Education Fund. Our goal is to continue to support all of “our students” for the coming academic year and to replace those who graduate with new ones.
Please make checks payable to LAUMC with “Africa Education Fund” on the memo line.
Also on January 29, our United Methodist Women will present their annual fundraiser called “SALE-ABRATION 2012”.
Coming just in time for Super Bowl Sunday, you will find all the snacks you’ll need to enjoy the big game with your family or with a crowd. If a hearty meal is your choice for that day, you can make delicious soups using mixes available in the “Souper-Bowl Soups” section!
